Understanding Common Wrist and Hand Issues
At Old Gore Farm, we’re dedicated to helping you understand and manage common wrist and hand issues. Here’s a simple guide to these conditions, their common causes, and how osteopathy can help.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
A condition where the median nerve, which runs through the carpal tunnel in the wrist, becomes compressed, causing pain, tingling, or weakness in the hand and fingers.

Common Causes: Repetitive wrist movements, such as typing or using hand tools, or underlying conditions like diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis.

Wrist Sprains and Strains
Injuries to the wrist ligaments (sprains) or muscles/tendons (strains) often resulting from sudden movements, overuse, or trauma.

Common Causes: Sudden movements, overuse, or direct trauma, such as from a fall or sports.

Tendinitis (e.g., De Quervain's Tenosynovitis)
Inflammation of the tendons in the wrist, such as De Quervain's, which affects the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist, causing pain and swelling.

Common Causes: Repetitive movements or overuse of the wrist, such as with certain sports or repetitive manual tasks.

Rheumatoid Arthritis
An autoimmune condition where the body's immune system attacks the wrist joints, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness.

Common Causes: Autoimmune response where the immune system attacks the joints, leading to inflammation and joint damage.

Osteoarthritis
A degenerative joint disease where the cartilage in the wrist deteriorates over time, leading to pain, swelling, and reduced joint mobility.

Common Causes: Wear and tear on the wrist joint, often related to ageing or previous joint injuries.

Trigger Finger
A condition where a finger gets stuck in a bent position and then suddenly straightens, often accompanied by pain and a clicking sensation.

Common Causes: Repetitive gripping movements or conditions causing inflammation in the tendons of the fingers.

Wrist Fractures (e.g., Colles' Fracture)
Breaks in the bones of the wrist, such as a Colles' fracture, which typically occurs near the wrist joint and is common from falls.

Common Causes: Trauma or falls, particularly when trying to catch oneself, leading to fractures in the wrist bones.

Ganglion Cysts
Non-cancerous lumps that form on the wrist or hand, often filled with a jelly-like fluid, causing discomfort or pressure.

Common Causes: Fluid-filled sacs that form from the joints or tendons, often appearing with no clear cause.

Dupuytren's Contracture
A condition where the connective tissue in the palm thickens and shortens, leading to bent fingers that cannot be fully straightened.

Common Causes: Thickening of the connective tissue in the palm, with a genetic predisposition often playing a role.

Nerve Compression Syndromes
Conditions where nerves in the wrist or hand become compressed, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness.

Common Causes: Repetitive stress, trauma, or conditions causing swelling that compresses nerves in the wrist or hand.
