Understanding Common Back Issues
At Old Gore Farm, we’re committed to helping you understand and manage common back issues. Here’s a straightforward guide to these conditions, their common causes, and how osteopathy can assist.
Lower Back Pain
A broad term for pain in the lower back region, which can be acute or chronic. It often results from muscle strain, poor posture, or underlying spinal conditions.
Common Causes: Muscle strain, poor posture, herniated discs, or degenerative changes in the spine.
Herniated Disc
Occurs when the inner gel-like core of a spinal disc pushes through a tear in the outer layer, potentially pressing on nearby nerves and causing pain or numbness.
Common Causes: Age-related disc degeneration, sudden heavy lifting, or trauma.
Sciatica
Characterised by pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down through the legs, often caused by compression of the nerve.
Common Causes: Herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or muscle spasms putting pressure on the sciatic nerve.
Degenerative Disc Disease
A condition where the spinal discs lose their cushioning ability over time, leading to pain and reduced flexibility in the spine.
Common Causes: Age-related wear and tear, or previous spinal injuries.
Spinal Stenosis
Narrowing of the spinal canal, which puts pressure on the spinal cord or nerves, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness, usually in the lower back or legs.
Common Causes: Age-related changes, such as bulging discs or bone spurs.
Scoliosis, Lordosis, Kyphosis
Conditions involving abnormal curvatures of the spine. Scoliosis is a sideways curvature, lordosis is an excessive inward curve, and kyphosis is an excessive outward curve.
Common Causes: Genetic factors, congenital issues, or degenerative changes.
Muscle Strain
An injury to the muscles in the back, typically caused by lifting heavy objects, sudden movements, or poor posture.
Common Causes: Heavy lifting, sudden movements, or poor posture.
Spinal Arthritis (Facet Joint Osteoarthritis)
A form of arthritis affecting the facet joints in the spine, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced movement in the back.
Common Causes: Age-related wear and tear or previous spinal injuries.
Upper Back Pain
Pain occurring in the upper portion of the back, often due to muscle strain, poor posture, or spinal issues.
Common Causes: Muscle strain, poor posture, or spinal conditions affecting the thoracic spine.
