Understanding Common Hip and Pelvic Issues
At Old Gore Farm, we’re here to help you understand and manage common hip and pelvic issues. Here’s a straightforward guide to these conditions, their common causes, and how osteopathy can make a difference.

Hip Osteoarthritis
A degenerative joint disease where the cartilage in the hip joint deteriorates over time, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.

Common Causes: Age-related wear and tear, previous hip injuries, or genetic factors.

Bursitis (e.g., Trochanteric Bursitis)
Inflammation of the bursa, a small fluid-filled sac near the hip joint, causing pain and tenderness on the outer side of the hip.

Common Causes: Repetitive stress, direct trauma, or prolonged pressure on the hip.

Hip Labral Tear
A tear in the labrum, the cartilage that lines the hip socket, which can cause pain, clicking sensations, and limited range of motion.

Common Causes: Trauma, repetitive hip movements, or structural abnormalities.

Hip Impingement (Femoroacetabular Impingement)
A condition where there is abnormal contact between the hip joint bones, leading to pain and reduced hip movement.

Common Causes: Structural abnormalities of the hip joint or repetitive activities that put stress on the hip.

Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
A condition where the muscles and connective tissues of the pelvic floor are weakened or not functioning properly, leading to issues like incontinence or pelvic pain.

Common Causes: Pregnancy and childbirth, chronic straining, or pelvic trauma.

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction
Discomfort or pain in the sacroiliac joint, which connects the spine to the pelvis, often resulting from abnormal movement or inflammation.

Common Causes: Abnormal joint movement, pregnancy, or injury.

Fractures
Breaks in the bones of the hip or pelvis, which can result from trauma, falls, or underlying conditions that weaken the bones.

Common Causes: Trauma from falls or accidents, or osteoporosis that makes bones more fragile.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)
A condition where the iliotibial band, a thick band of tissue running along the outside of the thigh, becomes irritated or inflamed, causing pain on the outside of the hip or knee.

Common Causes: Overuse from repetitive activities, such as running or cycling, or poor biomechanics.
