Understanding Common Knee Issues
At Old Gore Farm, we aim to help you understand and manage common knee problems. Here’s a clear guide to these conditions, their typical causes, and how osteopathy can assist.

Knee Pain
A general term for discomfort in the knee area, which can be caused by various factors, including injury, overuse, or underlying conditions.

Common Causes: Injuries, overuse, poor alignment, or underlying joint conditions.

Osteoarthritis of the Knee
A degenerative joint disease where the cartilage in the knee deteriorates over time, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.

Common Causes: Age-related wear and tear, previous knee injuries, or genetic predisposition.

Meniscus Tear
A tear in the meniscus, the cartilage that provides cushioning in the knee joint, causing pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the knee.

Common Causes: Sudden twisting movements, sports injuries, or degenerative changes in the cartilage.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injury
An injury to the ACL, a key ligament in the knee that helps stabilise the joint, often resulting from sudden stops or changes in direction.

Common Causes: Sports activities involving sudden direction changes, such as football or skiing, or trauma to the knee.

Patellar Tendinitis (Jumper's Knee)
Inflammation of the tendon connecting the kneecap to the shinbone, causing pain and tenderness at the front of the knee.

Common Causes: Repetitive jumping or running activities, or overuse of the knee.

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
Pain around the kneecap, often due to issues with the alignment or tracking of the patella as it moves in the knee joint.

Common Causes: Overuse, poor alignment, or muscle imbalances around the knee.

Bursitis (e.g., Prepatellar Bursitis)
Inflammation of the bursa, a small fluid-filled sac that helps reduce friction in the knee joint, causing swelling and discomfort.

Common Causes: Repetitive kneeling or pressure on the knee, or direct trauma.

Knee Sprains and Strains
Injuries to the ligaments (sprains) or muscles and tendons (strains) around the knee, often caused by sudden movements or trauma.

Common Causes: Sudden movements, excessive force, or trauma to the knee.

Knee Instability
A feeling of the knee “giving way” or lacking support, often due to weakened or injured ligaments or muscles around the knee.

Common Causes: Ligament injuries, muscle weakness, or joint damage.

Chondromalacia Patellae
Softening and damage to the cartilage on the underside of the kneecap, causing pain and discomfort during movement.

Common Causes: Overuse, poor alignment of the patella, or injury to the knee.
