Understanding Common Elbow Issues
Our Osteopaths At Old Gore Farm, are here to help you understand and manage common elbow issues. Here’s a simple guide to these conditions, their common causes, and how osteopathy can make a difference.

Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)
A condition characterised by pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow, often caused by repetitive use of the forearm muscles, such as in tennis or other activities involving gripping or twisting.

Common Causes: Repetitive use or overuse of the forearm muscles, especially during activities that involve gripping or twisting motions.

Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)
Similar to tennis elbow, this condition involves pain and tenderness on the inside of the elbow. It is often due to repetitive stress or overuse of the muscles and tendons in the forearm.

Common Causes: Repetitive stress or overuse of the muscles and tendons on the inside of the elbow, often related to activities that involve swinging or gripping.

Elbow Bursitis (Olecranon Bursitis)
Inflammation of the bursa at the tip of the elbow, resulting in swelling and discomfort. It can be caused by prolonged pressure or trauma to the elbow.

Common Causes: Prolonged pressure on the elbow or direct trauma, such as from a fall or frequent resting on hard surfaces.

Elbow Strain or Sprain
Strains and sprains involve damage to the muscles or ligaments around the elbow. They typically result from sudden movements, excessive use, or trauma.

Common Causes: Sudden movements, excessive use, or direct trauma to the elbow.

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
A condition where the ulnar nerve, which runs through the cubital tunnel at the elbow, becomes compressed, causing pain, tingling, or weakness in the forearm and hand.

Common Causes: Compression of the ulnar nerve due to prolonged elbow flexion, trauma, or repetitive stress.

Elbow Dislocation
Occurs when the bones of the elbow are forced out of their normal positions, often due to trauma or sudden impact.

Common Causes: Trauma or sudden impact, such as from a fall or sports injuries.

Fractures (e.g., Olecranon Fracture)
A fracture involves a break in one of the bones of the elbow, such as the olecranon (the bony prominence of the elbow). It can occur from trauma or excessive force.

Common Causes: Trauma, such as a fall or direct impact, or excessive force applied to the elbow.

Elbow Tendonitis
Inflammation of the tendons around the elbow, commonly resulting from repetitive activities or overuse. It can affect the tendons on either side of the elbow.

Common Causes: Repetitive activities or overuse of the elbow tendons, often related to sports or manual labour.
